Hey Todd,
I have “Bad Behavior” envy… my blog has only had 384 attempts blocked in the last week, not 800 like you.
I caught a lot of “blue belly” lizards when I was a kid, but I missed out on tadpoles experience. Good thing there are “second childhoods”. ~ Steve

Hi Steve,

I have bad behavior installed on a couple of my blogs. I must have needed it, on one blog, it says it’s blocked almost 800 attempts in the past week.

As for people not getting through …

I don’t know if I’ve had that problem, nobody has contacted me. But the so far, the people who I want to interact with seem to still be there, so it’s all good.

As for the tadpoles … that brings back memories, way back when I was 6 or 7, I was very into that sort of thing. My friends and I collected bugs, lizards, fish, tadpoles, etc. We even had books, and knew the names of all their various body parts. Your kids are lucky. lol, but I’d be just like you … probably more excited about it than the “real” kids.

hey RT,
What kind of “regulars” to do you have?
I think I’m going to stick with Bad Behavior for now, though it’s disconcerting that everyone that has tried it (and has commented here) has decided not to use it. I’ll put on my list to consider WP-SpamFree instead.
Thanks for mentioning that Firefox may allow “incognito” surfing in the future. I’ll be sure to check that out. ~ Steve

I tried the bad behavior plugin and dumped it in favor of others because it WAS blocking some regulars. It blocked anyone who surfed anonymously and I don’t if it still does. Firefox 3.1 (or 3.5) will have that option built in and Chrome already does. If it blocks those folks then it can’t be good. Right now, I just use Akismet and WP-SpamFree and it seems to work very well.

That may change in the future, but I try not to think about it too much. The last ditch effort is to moderate all comments.

Yes, watching tadpoles grow is amazing. I never got the chance to do it as a kid myself, but that’s one of the the great thing about now being a parent with kids… I think I’m more into than my kids.
I don’t know how aggressive Bad Behavior is. You still get through along with my other regulars, and I still get a little spam. I shall have to see… ~ Steve

The title sure got my attention! You are having amazing success with the baby frogs. I hope you are taking lots of photos as the grow.

I used to use Bad Behavior but felt it might be too aggressive. I now use the Simple Trackback Validation plugin and the Cookies for Comments plugin and spam is under control. And I do look as at least one or two valid comments a month get caught.

I was saying to myself as I read that “what the heck is Steve drinking tonight”.. then I got to the addendum and had a good laugh. Thanks!

@JD, 45 pages in your Akismet folder? Wow! If you just delete and don’t wade through them, it’s no big deal, but if you do like to look through them, Bad Behavior will probably get rid of 95% of the obvious spam and make reviewing the rest a lot faster. As I wrote, the difference and why I think it’s awesome to use the two together, is Bad Behavior blocks most of the spammers from even coming to your blog, and Akismet then catches most of the riff-raff that are able to sneak by. ~ Steve

I’ve heard of Bad Behavior but never really knew how it was different from Akismet (which I use). Lately, Akismet has been working fine for me, but there have been times when I’ve had, like, 45 pages of spam comments. So I might be looking into Bad Behavior at some point (but probably not tadpoles).

Thanks for the Bad Behaviour review. I’ve already downloaded it. I just need to upload and activate on each blog. I’m hoping to ease some of the manual IP blocking I’ve been doing. I seem to get several IPs posting many times over just minutes apart. I even get identical posts from the same IPs on several of my blogs. I seem to be on a list or something.

That wacky Jim Jones. He sounds like an ideal employee.
If your tadpoles start drowning, it’s probably because they don’t have the Climb On The Rock plugin installed in the correct folder. Move it to the folder marked self preservation and its a done deal. Once they run the latest lung upgrade program their operating systems will be state of the art Amphibian 3.8 .
